What Really Happened – Tuesday 9 September 1969

Liverpool – Sunderland 2-0

The Guardian reported that Sunderland are the deadwood of the division and “play like tired old men” and “waiting to be pensioned off” to the second division.

The inept displays are to be blamed on the board who haven’t tried to invest in the team.

The 2-0 scoreline truly flattered the visitors. Liverpool were “masters, manipulation their puppets with ease”. Sunderland’s Montgomery made several superb saved and the woodwork came to the visitors aid.

Liverpool should have scored so many more.

There was fallout to the inept beginning Sunderland has made to the season. Sunderland Chairman, Sydney Collings, stood down, the day after the Liverpool game, due to ill health. However the 63 year old master builder and 18 year board member will become vice chairman. So big change then. Yes sarcasm.
