Ah the smell of liniment fills the air once more. And another football season is upon us. Once again it’s the FA Charity Shield to hark in the new season at Elland Road, the home of last season’s mighty champions, Leeds United.
They will be hosting Manchester City, FA Cup winners and no strangers to this competition, as league champions they obliviated the remnants of a West Brom side 6-1 a mere year ago.
Leeds will be introducing Allan Clarke, their new signing from Leicester, quite costly at 100,000 pounds sterling. He will be joining the irrepressible Mick Jones up forward which could bolster the fortunes of the champions no end this season.
Leeds would be favourites to win at home, and history is against Manchester City, with only the sublime Tottenham Hotspur and Bolton winning the shield as cup holders.
The football gods might be favouring Leeds United today but as the mythical gods of old, they are a fickle lot and out to please nobody but themselves. Beware the Ides of August Leeds United!
